Project History and Purpose: Creel Ditch is an incised drainage channel draining a 4.7-square mile watershed of row crops and pasture (69%), water and wetlands (16%), forest (8%), and low and high density development (6%). In 2006, The Nature Conservancy – Upper St. Joseph Project Office received a grant from The Joyce Foundation to implement conservation practices in the Creel Ditch watershed to reduce sedimentation to the downstream receiving system, Fish Creek. Fish Creek is the only known location where the White Cat’s Paw Pearly mussel, a federally endangered species, is currently found. Prior to construction of the two-stage channel the existing trapezoidal channel had mass bank failures scattered throughout much of the project reach impacting water quality and habitat.   The Nature Conservancy worked with 7 landowners along Creel Ditch to implement 5,200-feet of two-stage channel. Pre- and post-construction monitoring suggested nitrate, phosphorus, and total suspended sediment loads were reduced after two-years and fish and macro-invertebrate communities were improved relative to pre-construction conditions. Ammonia concentrations and substrate composition were not significantly different after two-years.
